OPEN HEARTS OPEN DOORS
OPEN HEARTS OPEN DOORS
CHINA
Presented here are a selection of images from a body of work that records the vernacular architecture and traditional environment of rural areas throughout the south eastern provinces of China. Shot over a ten year period, from 1995-2006, the work was done during several visits while I was an artist-in-residence at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The culmination of the project was the publication of OPEN HEARTS OPEN DOORS, REFLECTIONS ON CHINA’S PAST & FUTURE (Cornell University Press, 2008).
This body of work captures images of a fast changing landscape, threatened by the accelerated development and modernization in mainland China. As much intended as an historical archive, its nostalgic beauty is also hopefully a catalyst for initiatives that push for protection of China’s invaluable heritage.
